I'm an equipment operator and groundman for DC Tree Cutting, which means I run the machines.
How I got into tree work
I got into tree work because a good friend of mine had been doing it for years. The trade always interested me, so I started learning the job straight from him, and that was two and a half years ago now.
What I do on your job
My work starts before the saws even crank. I haul the equipment out to the client's property, and once we're on site I work the ground. Most days that means running the Bobcat T595 with a bucket or grapple, the Takeuchi TL12R2 with the forestry mulcher, or the stump grinder.
Stay locked in
Tree work is dangerous, and I refuse to cut corners on safety. Using improper tools and equipment is a big no for me, and you have to keep your mind sharp on a job site. The moment your mind wanders and your focus isn't on the task at hand, this profession becomes incredibly dangerous for you and everyone working around you. You have to stay locked in.
The job I'm proudest of
The job I'm proudest of so far was for the town of Scotland Neck, where we had three big trees sitting right against a house, a barn, and live power lines. We had to be precise, and we got all three down safe, ground the stumps, and left the place looking good. The town was happy with how it came out.
What storms do to trees around here
Around Rocky Mount, Goldsboro, and Wilson, no tree is safe from lightning strikes, and after every big storm we see pines with their tops broken out and hardwoods with heavy limbs snapped off.
Why DC Tree
I came to DC Tree because I knew Chris, the supervisor, and once I met Anthony and the rest of the team I knew it was the right fit. This company takes a lot of pride in safety and how it treats people.
I grew up in Wilson, so this is home. When I'm off the clock I'm with my family, usually camping or fishing.
