What Stump Grinding Is and Why It Matters

After a tree comes down, the stump stays. It sits there for years, slowly rotting, attracting termites, getting in the way of your mower, and reminding you every week that you should really do something about it.

Stump grinding is the fix. A stump grinder uses a rotating carbide-tipped wheel to chew the stump and its surface roots into small chips. We grind 6-8 inches below the surrounding grade, fill the hole with the resulting chips, and the stump is gone. The area can be covered with topsoil and seeded, sodded, or just left to settle.

We grind stumps across Nash, Wayne, Wilson, Edgecombe, Halifax, Johnston, and Pitt counties. It’s one of our fastest services - most jobs are done in a couple of hours, and we can often do same-day service.

Three Ways We Handle Stumps

Not every stump calls for the same approach. We carry multiple machines so we can match the method to the job:

  • Vermeer SC48TX stump grinder. Our primary grinder for most residential stumps. Self-propelled, tracks through gates and tight spaces, grinds 6-8 inches below grade. This is what we use 80% of the time.
  • Dipperfox SC500. A skid steer-mounted attachment for batch jobs where the Bobcat is already on site. Faster setup when we’re already running the machine for land clearing.
  • Excavator extraction. For construction sites where the entire root ball needs to come out, not just ground down. Full removal, not grinding. Necessary when you’re building on the spot.

The Stump Grinding Process

Assessment

Not all stumps grind the same way. Before we start, we check:

  • Diameter. This determines time and cost. A 10-inch pine stump grinds in minutes. A 40-inch oak stump is a bigger job.
  • Root flare. Some species, especially hardwoods, have a wide root flare at the base that’s actually bigger than the trunk was. We grind the flare too - nobody wants a ring of roots sticking up around a ground-level hole.
  • Location. Is it against a fence? Near a foundation? In the middle of the yard? Next to a sidewalk? Location determines equipment access and whether there are any obstructions we need to work around.
  • Soil and rock. Eastern NC is generally kind to us - sandy loam and clay, not much rock. But occasionally stumps are surrounded by fill dirt with brick, concrete, or stone. Hitting those damages the grinder teeth, so we need to know upfront.
  • Utilities. We always check for underground utilities before grinding. The grinder goes below grade, and hitting a gas line or fiber optic cable is not an option. NC 811 locates are free and we’ll make sure they’re done before we start if there’s any question.

Grinding

The grinder positions next to the stump and the cutting wheel sweeps back and forth across the surface, taking 2-3 inches per pass and working down below grade. The operator controls depth and direction, working from one side to the other until the entire stump is below the surrounding soil level.

Standard depth is 6-8 inches below grade. This is sufficient for:

  • Planting grass or laying sod
  • Covering with topsoil and mulch for a garden bed
  • General yard use

If the stump location is being used for construction - a foundation, driveway, patio, or any structure - we can grind deeper. 12-18 inches below grade is typical for construction prep. Deeper grinding takes more time and costs more, but it ensures no wood remains where you’re building.

Surface Roots

Trees don’t stop at the stump. Surface roots can extend 10, 20, even 50 feet from the trunk. We grind the major surface roots in the immediate area around the stump - typically 2-3 feet out from the trunk in every direction. Roots beyond that are below grade and won’t cause problems.

If you have roots running across your yard that are heaving up the lawn or cracking a walkway, we can chase those out further. Just point them out during the estimate.

Cleanup

After grinding, there’s a pile of wood chips and dirt where the stump used to be. The volume of grindings is always more than the volume of the original stump - grinding fluffs the material up. We rake the grindings into the hole and mound them slightly above grade because they’ll settle over the next few weeks as they compact and begin decomposing.

Options for the grindings:

  • Leave them. Most common. They settle and decompose over 6-12 months. You can seed over them or cover with topsoil.
  • Haul off. We remove the grindings and backfill with clean topsoil. This is the better option if you want to plant grass seed or sod immediately.
  • Repurpose. Wood chips make decent mulch for garden beds. If you want them moved to a different part of the property, we can do that.

We rake the area clean, blow any debris off hard surfaces, and the job is done.

Why Remove a Stump

People live with stumps in their yard for years. Here’s why that’s usually a bad idea:

Termite Magnet

A rotting stump is a buffet for subterranean termites. In Eastern NC, termites are a fact of life - the warm, humid climate is ideal for them. A decaying stump 20 feet from your house is basically a welcome sign. The termites establish a colony in the stump, expand their foraging tunnels, and eventually find your foundation. Pest control companies in Nash and Wayne counties will tell you the same thing: get rid of the stumps.

Trip Hazard

Stumps in yards where people walk, kids play, or guests visit are a liability. A stump that’s been mowed around for years gets obscured by grass. Someone walks across the yard at dusk, catches their foot, and goes down. This is especially a concern for rental properties and commercial sites.

Mowing Obstacle

Mowing around stumps is annoying and time-consuming. Landscapers charge more for yards with stumps because they have to slow down and navigate around them. Over a few years of mowing seasons, the added mowing cost approaches what grinding would have cost in the first place.

Aesthetic

A stump in a maintained lawn looks neglected. If you’re selling a property in Johnston County or anywhere in Eastern NC, stumps in the yard signal deferred maintenance to buyers. A clean yard without stumps looks better and photographs better for listings.

Construction Obstruction

You can’t pour a patio, build a deck, install a fence, or lay a driveway over a stump. If the stump is where you want to build, it has to go. It’s cheaper to grind it now than to discover it’s in the way during construction.

Pricing

We price stump grinding by diameter because that’s the most honest way to do it. Bigger stumps take more time, use more fuel, and wear more teeth on the grinder. Here’s what to expect:

Stump DiameterTypical Cost
Under 12 inches$250 - $400
12-24 inches$400 - $600
24-36 inches$600 - $800
36+ inches$800 - $1,000+

Batch Discounts

Multiple stumps on the same property are cheaper per stump. Once the grinder is on site and set up, moving from stump to stump is quick. If you’ve got 5 or 10 stumps from a recent clearing, the per-stump price drops fast.

Common batch scenarios:

  • Post-tree-removal cleanup. You had several trees taken down and now have 5 stumps to grind.
  • Property purchase cleanup. You bought a place in Greenville or Wilson with old stumps scattered around the yard.
  • Storm aftermath. Insurance covered the tree removal, now you’re dealing with the stumps yourself.

For customers who bundle stump grinding with tree removal on the same job, we offer a better rate than if you book them separately. It’s more efficient for us to grind while equipment is already on site.

For pricing broken down by stump diameter and species, see our stump grinding cost guide.

What’s Included

  • Grinding to 6-8 inches below grade
  • Surface root grinding in the immediate area
  • Grindings raked into the hole
  • Debris cleanup and area raked

What Costs Extra

  • Deep grinding (below 8 inches) for construction prep
  • Grindings hauled off and topsoil backfill
  • Extended root grinding beyond the immediate stump area
  • Access challenges requiring smaller equipment

Not sure whether grinding or full removal is right for your situation? Read our stump grinding vs removal comparison for a detailed breakdown of the three methods we use.

Most stump grinding jobs follow a tree removal. If you have a property with multiple stumps from a land clearing project, we offer volume pricing. Need the debris hauled? Our grapple truck handles that. For pricing on all our services, see the pricing guide.

Our Regrind Guarantee

If your stump sprouts regrowth within 12 months of our service, we’ll come back and regrind it at no charge. No paperwork, no hassle. Call us and we’ll schedule a return trip.

We grind every stump 6-8 inches below grade, which eliminates regrowth in the vast majority of cases. But some species, especially sweetgum, crepe myrtle, and Bradford pear, can send up sprouts from remaining roots. If that happens, one call and we’re back out.

Same-Day and Next-Day Service

Stump grinding is one of our fastest-turnaround services. For single stumps or small batch jobs, we can often schedule same-day or next-day service depending on crew availability. If you’re adding stump grinding to a tree removal we’re already doing, we grind the stumps the same day - no need for a separate trip.

What to Expect on Grinding Day

A single stump takes 15-45 minutes depending on diameter and root spread. Batch jobs of 3-5 stumps usually wrap in half a day.

We bring the grinder on a trailer, back it up to the stump, and grind it 6-8 inches below grade. The grindings stay on-site as fill for the hole unless you want them hauled. We rake the area level. No trenches, no craters. If the stump is in a tight spot — between a fence and a foundation, next to a sidewalk — the Vermeer SC48TX fits where bigger machines can’t.

Your yard gets the grinder and one truck. We don’t tear up the lawn getting equipment in and out.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does stump grinding cost?
Most residential stumps cost $250-$1,000 depending on diameter. A 12-inch stump is a quick job. A 36-inch oak stump takes three to four times as long. We offer batch discounts - if you have multiple stumps, the per-stump price drops. We price by diameter, not by the hour.
How deep do you grind?
We grind 6-8 inches below grade as standard. That's deep enough to plant grass, lay sod, or cover with topsoil. If you're building or pouring a slab and need deeper removal, we can go 12+ inches below grade for an additional charge.
What happens to the grindings?
The grinding process produces a pile of wood chips mixed with dirt. We can leave the grindings in the hole and mound them up (they'll settle over a few weeks), haul them off, or backfill with topsoil. Most customers leave the grindings - they decompose and settle naturally.
Can you grind a stump next to a fence or foundation?
Yes, but with limitations. The grinder head needs clearance to work. We can get very close to fences and foundations but may not be able to grind the portion directly against the obstruction. We'll tell you upfront if access is a concern.
Will stump grinding damage my yard?
There will be some ground disturbance in the immediate area - tire tracks from the grinder and a pile of grindings where the stump was. We clean up debris and rake the area. Any turf damage from equipment is minor and grows back quickly.
How long does stump grinding take?
A single average-sized stump (12-18 inches) takes 15-30 minutes of actual grinding time. Add setup and cleanup, and most single-stump jobs are done within an hour of arrival. Batch jobs with multiple stumps are knocked out in a half day.
Should I grind stumps or just leave them?
That depends on where the stump is and what you're doing with the area. Stumps in a yard attract termites, create trip hazards, make mowing difficult, and look bad. Stumps in a wooded area where nobody walks? Leave them. Stumps where you want to build, pave, or plant? Grind them.
What if my stump grows back after grinding?
Some species like sweetgum, crepe myrtle, and Bradford pear can send up sprouts from remaining roots. If your ground stump sprouts regrowth within 12 months, we'll come back and regrind it free. We grind 6-8 inches below grade to minimize this, but if it happens, one call and we're back out.
Can you grind stumps from trees that were removed years ago?
Yes. We grind old stumps all the time. Some have been sitting for decades. Old stumps are actually easier - the wood is softer from decay, so the grinder moves through them faster. The price is the same whether the tree came down last week or ten years ago.

Need the tree taken down too? We handle removal and grinding together so you only pay for one crew mobilization.
