Diesel Mechanic
Part-time position keeping our heavy equipment fleet running across Eastern NC
About the Role
We're looking for a diesel mechanic to take care of our fleet - grapple trucks, forestry mulchers, excavators, Bobcat skid steers, chip trucks, and the support vehicles that keep all of it moving. The work runs the full range: preventive maintenance and routine service on one end, motor rebuilds and inframes on the other.
This is a part-time position to start, roughly 20-30 hours a week, with the schedule flexible around your other work and our fleet's needs. As the company grows we expect this role to grow with it. If you want it to stay part-time, that's fine too - what we care about is the work getting done right.
You'll split your time between the shop and the field depending on what's broken and where it broke. Some days you're tearing into an engine on the bench. Other days you're driving out to a job site to get a grapple truck back online so the crew isn't standing around. We need someone we can trust to make the call on the spot.
What You'll Do
- Perform preventive maintenance on the full fleet - fluids, filters, brakes, hydraulics, DPF/regen, electrical
- Diagnose and repair diesel engine issues across grapple trucks, mulchers, excavators, and skid steers
- Handle major engine work including rebuilds and inframes when the job calls for it
- Maintain documentation and service records - what was done, when, what parts went in, what's coming due
- Manage warranty claims with manufacturers and dealers (Takeuchi, Bobcat, Peterbilt, and others)
- Build and maintain vendor relationships for parts sourcing and outside service work
- Work at the shop or roll out to job sites in the field as needed
What We're Looking For
- Diesel mechanic experience - heavy equipment, commercial trucks, or fleet maintenance background
- Range of skill - comfortable with both routine PM and the bigger jobs (rebuilds, inframes, hydraulics)
- Documentation discipline - you keep records, not just memories
- Self-directed - you can work the shop solo or roll to a job site without hand-holding
- Team player - can-do attitude, easy to work with, but honest about what you do and don't know
- Valid driver's license - required
- CDL - nice to have, not required
Compensation & Schedule
- $20-35 per hour depending on experience
- Part-time, roughly 20-30 hours per week
- Flexible scheduling - built around the fleet's needs and your availability
- Year-round work, not seasonal
- Path to expanded hours as the fleet grows
- Real equipment to work on - Takeuchi TL12R2 forestry mulcher, Peterbilt grapple trucks, excavators, Bobcat skid steers, chip trucks
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and move parts and components up to 75 lbs
- Comfortable working under and around heavy equipment in shop and field conditions
- Ability to work on your feet for extended periods, including bending, kneeling, and reaching overhead
Additional Information
- Employment with DC Tree Cutting and Land Service LLC is at-will
- Must be authorized to work in the United States
- DC Tree Cutting maintains a drug-free workplace. Pre-employment and random testing may apply
- Valid driver's license required. CDL is a plus
